With its sporty yet subtle design, the PEUGEOT 205 GTi set the template for every GTi model that followed. Tasked with translating the hallmarks of GTi into the electric era, PEUGEOT Design Director Matthias Hossann explains how he fused heritage with a forward-looking approach to create the new E-208 GTi.
“Designing E-208 GTi was really a question of balance. Our philosophy was that we didn’t want to go too far in one particular direction, so it’s a balance between performance and elegance.
“We didn’t want the exterior design to be too overstated or to show off too much. If you love cars, you will look at E-208 GTi and immediately see that it’s a GTi because of its stance. If you’re not an expert, you will still see a beautiful 208.”
The E-208 GTi is distinguished by its strong stance on the road, thanks to a body lowered by 25mm and tracks widened by 56mm at the front and 28mm at the rear. Wider wheel arches with flared lower sections accommodate the increased tracks and are highlighted with an elegant and sporty red line, a nod to the 205 GTi.
To further enhance the bolder stance, a front spoiler has been added to the bottom of the front bumper, while at the rear a gloss black aerodynamic diffuser integrates a new LED rear fog light for more elegance and discretion.
Looking to the past – and the future
With the GTi badge dating back more than 40 years, heritage played a key role in shaping the design of the E-208 GTi, as Hossann explains:
“We have more than 200 years of history; heritage is our backbone and we are super respectful of that. But PEUGEOT also looks to the future. The reason we’re still here after 200 years of history is that we’re dedicated to producing carefully designed products for the new generation of customers.”
Hossann cites the 2018 PEUGEOT e-LEGEND concept, created to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the 504 Coupe, as another source of inspiration.
“With both cars, we take heritage but push it into the future. It's always interesting looking at past colours and shapes, then we tweak it and move it into the future to make it a proper PEUGEOT.
“Once again, it’s a question of balance. With E-208 GTi, there was no question of doing a purely retro design. But we did want to keep our heritage. We're really proud of that, but we wanted to twist it with innovation and push it into the future.”
Exterior design details
A key focal point when designing the E-208 GTi was the large 18-inch wheels, with Hossann and his team experimenting with different versions to create an iconic look.
Hossann said: “The wheels were inspired by the Speedlines from 205 GTi 1.9, but we designed them in-house and we had both 1.9 and 1.6-litre 205 GTi in mind.
“The centre curve is like the 1.6 and the exterior shape is more like the 1.9. It’ll remind people who know all about 205 GTi of that car and people who don’t know about that will still say it’s a good rim.”
But on a GTi, design also serves performance; the perforated structure also helps to optimise brake cooling.
Another direct link to the past is the choice of body colours, with several referencing the 205 GTi. Seven colours are available, including Okénite White, Elixir Red, Miramar Blue, Nera Black, Cumulus Grey, Selenium Grey and Agueda Yellow.
This is complemented by subtle GTi red details on the grille, headlights, PEUGEOT front emblem, wheel arches, front brake calipers and C-pillar badges.
Creating an immersive interior
The red theme is carried through into the interior. The bright red carpets, floor mats and seatbelts of the E-208 GTi, like those of the 205 GTi, immediately create a sporty atmosphere in the cabin. The compact steering wheel, a key element of PEUGEOT’s driving pleasure, features perforated leather combined with Alcantara® and a red ‘208 GTi’ emblem.
Hossann highlights the red detailing on the rear spoiler, visible through the rear-view mirror, as another subtle touch to remind to drivers that they are behind the wheel of a GTi.
Special attention was paid to the front seats to create an elegant, sporty design without sacrificing comfort.
Hossann said: “On the seats, we have a finish like we used to have in the 205 GTi with two materials: Alcantara® and special red textiles, with a central red line that extends across the seat and backrest.”
Shaping the future of PEUGEOT design
With the E-208 GTi, Hossann set out to create a modern successor that encapsulates the elegance of the original 205 GTi, while remaining committed to PEUGEOT’s future-focused design philosophy.
“I think E-208 GTi is a good example of using the right proportion of our heritage but taking it into in the future. This is the overall mindset that we have in the design studio when we’re working on the next generation of PEUGEOT models.”
