New research from Peugeot UK has revealed that work vans play a much bigger role in drivers’ everyday lives than simply providing transport between jobs. For many, their vehicle has become a personal space to relax, recharge and escape the pressures of the working day.
The research found that 43% of van drivers consider their vehicle their own ‘quiet space’, while 34% see it as their work office and 29% use it as somewhere to get away from workplace stress. With drivers spending an average of 17 hours per week in their vans, around one in five even considers their vehicle a second home.
Comfort and convenience are therefore important considerations. Air conditioning was identified as the most valued interior feature by 62% of respondents, followed by storage space (52%), adjustable seats (48%) and smartphone connectivity (47%).
Peugeot's Partner has been designed with these everyday requirements in mind. Air conditioning comes as standard, alongside a range of practical storage solutions, including a full-width overhead shelf. A load-through bulkhead is also fitted as standard, while the Crew Van configuration offers seating for up to five occupants. All versions feature Peugeot's i-Cockpit with a 10-inch HD touchscreen and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.
The research also explored how drivers spend their lunch breaks, with almost half (48%) choosing to eat inside their vans. On average, van drivers eat lunch in their vehicles four days a week, with the most popular locations including work sites, supermarket car parks, service stations and scenic spots. More than half (55%) typically eat alone, making the van an important space for some personal downtime.
During these breaks, drivers often listen to the radio (64%) or scroll through social media (55%), while 37% use the time to call friends or family. Others catch up on the news, complete work administration, listen to podcasts or even take a nap.
Beyond work, the survey also highlighted how important vans are to drivers' personal lives. Almost two-thirds (63%) use their vehicles for shopping, while 49% rely on them to visit friends and family. Other common uses include sports and holidays (29%) and the school run (26%). This versatility is reflected in the range of personal belongings regularly stored in vans, from food and paperwork to clothing and sports equipment.
Steve Wass, Managing Director of Peugeot UK, said the work van has become much more than a way of travelling between jobs, describing it as both an office and an important place for drivers to take a well-earned break. He also highlighted the Partner's 30-year heritage, reliability and comfortable interior as key reasons for its continued popularity.
Originally launched in 1996 and now in its third generation, the Peugeot Partner remains the UK's best-selling compact van. Available in standard and long-wheelbase versions, with a choice of diesel and electric powertrains for the same monthly rental, it offers businesses flexibility alongside practical everyday features.
The findings reinforce the importance of comfort, connectivity and versatility in modern commercial vehicles, with the Partner demonstrating how a well-equipped van can support drivers both during the working day and beyond.
