More than 35 years after first arriving on the road, the Mazda MX-5 continues to champion the brand’s enduring philosophy of pure driving enjoyment. As the world’s best-selling roadster, with more than 1.2 million examples sold globally, the MX-5 has become an automotive icon, and the arrival of the 2027 model year brings a series of carefully considered updates designed to enhance its distinctive character.
The 2027 Mazda MX-5 will arrive in UK dealerships in January, with an eight-model range spanning Prime-Line, Exclusive-Line, Homura and Homura Plus grades across both Roadster and RF body styles. All versions will be powered exclusively by Mazda’s 136ps 1.5-litre Skyactiv-G petrol engine, while a new Zinc Green Metallic paint colour adds another distinctive option to the MX-5’s already characterful design.
The move to a single-engine line-up follows the end of the extended sales period for the 184ps 2.0-litre Skyactiv-G engine in the UK. The 2.0-litre engine was withdrawn from European markets in 2024 as a result of changing emissions regulations, although differing derogation timings allowed it to remain on sale in the UK for longer. With this period now coming to an end, the 2.0-litre will not continue into the 2027 model year.
Mazda UK Managing Director Jeremy Thomson said: “We have sufficient stock of 2.0-litre models to meet anticipated customer demand until around January, when the 2027 Mazda MX-5 will arrive in UK dealerships. While it’s a shame that changing legislation means we can no longer sell the 2.0-litre in the UK, the 1.5-litre engine remains at the heart of the MX-5.
“The current-generation MX-5 was originally developed around this engine, with its lightweight, responsive and accessible performance perfectly reflecting Jinba Ittai. The 1.5-litre ensures customers can continue to enjoy the lightweight, engaging and fun-to-drive experience that has defined the Mazda MX-5 for more than 35 years and continues to win awards as one of the best driving cars on the road today.”
For 2027, the 1.5-litre Skyactiv-G engine benefits from a small increase in power and torque, now producing 136ps and 155Nm. Alongside the performance improvements, CO2 emissions have been reduced to 139g/km, while refinements to the engine’s acoustics have been introduced to further enhance the connection between driver and car.
The updated engine also opens the door for the introduction of the Homura and Homura Plus grades to the 1.5-litre MX-5 for the first time. Designed to add an even stronger sporting focus, both models feature 16-inch metallic black RAYS alloy wheels, red Brembo front brakes, red rear brake callipers and black door mirrors.
Inside, the Homura and Homura Plus continue the performance-inspired theme with Recaro seats, alongside black air vent surrounds and air-conditioning controls. The two grades also benefit from Bilstein dampers and a front strut brace, bringing additional chassis upgrades to the 1.5-litre MX-5 and reinforcing its focus on agility, balance and driver involvement.
Across the entire 2027 range, the MX-5 will also introduce Zinc Green Metallic as a new exterior colour. The shade takes inspiration from the colour and texture of zinc chromate primer, an industrial undercoat designed to enhance durability. Mazda has historically offered around 80 different shades of green, and the new colour continues that tradition while giving the MX-5 a modern interpretation of a classic roadster colour.
The 2027 model also brings additional safety and driver assistance technology. Driver Monitoring is now standard across all grades, while the range-topping Homura Plus adds Adaptive LED Headlights, Smart Brake Support Rear, Rear Crossing Alert, Vehicle Exit Warning and a rear-view camera.
Despite these updates, the fundamentals of the MX-5 remain unchanged. Its compact dimensions, lightweight construction, rear-wheel-drive layout and six-speed manual gearbox continue to provide the kind of direct, engaging driving experience that has become increasingly rare in the modern car market.
That makes the MX-5 particularly distinctive in the UK, where affordable sports cars and convertibles are becoming an increasingly small part of the new-car market. The MX-5 is one of only three convertibles currently available in the UK for under £30,000, and the only one of those three to be a dedicated sports car. It is also one of only three mainstream roadsters available for less than £50,000 and one of just two rear-wheel-drive cars with a combustion engine available for under £30,000.
Its six-speed manual transmission further strengthens its position as a car focused on driver involvement, at a time when automatic transmissions are becoming increasingly dominant across the new-car market.
The MX-5’s appeal has always been rooted in simplicity rather than outright performance. Instead of chasing ever-higher power outputs, Mazda has continued to focus on balance, lightweight engineering and the Jinba Ittai philosophy of creating a close connection between driver and car.
With the 2027 Mazda MX-5, that approach remains firmly intact. The updated 1.5-litre engine, new Homura grades, additional technology and fresh Zinc Green Metallic colour give the latest model a renewed sense of appeal, while retaining the qualities that have made the MX-5 one of the most recognisable and enduring sports cars of the modern era.
The 2027 Mazda MX-5 will arrive in UK showrooms in January, continuing more than three decades of success and reinforcing its position as one of the country’s most accessible and distinctive driver-focused sports cars.
