Chery is continuing to build its presence in the UK, combining a growing range of high-specification SUVs with investment in local engineering and development. The latest step in the brand’s UK expansion is the planned opening of a new research and development centre at UTAC Millbrook in Bedfordshire , expected to open in late autumn 2026.
The new facility will allow Chery to develop and calibrate its vehicles specifically for UK driving conditions, with initial work focusing on areas including chassis development and driver-assistance systems. Longer term, the centre is expected to support development in areas such as autonomous driving and artificial intelligence.
The move represents an important step in Chery’s ambitions for the UK market. Gary Lan, CEO of Chery International UK, said the partnership with UTAC Millbrook will allow the company to “turn UK customer insight into product development”, helping Chery adapt its vehicles around the requirements of British drivers.
The new R&D facility follows Chery’s wider expansion in the UK and its growing network of retailers. The company has also agreed a non-binding partnership with Nissan to explore the production of Chery vehicles at Nissan’s Sunderland plant, demonstrating ambitions that extend beyond importing vehicles into the UK.
At the heart of Chery’s current offering is a focus on high specification and value, with the brand positioning its vehicles as an alternative for customers looking for premium features and technology without the corresponding premium price tag. The current UK range includes the TIGGO 4, TIGGO 7, TIGGO 8 and TIGGO 9, with petrol and Super Hybrid powertrains available across the range.
The value proposition also extends to ownership. Chery provides a seven-year/100,000-mile manufacturer warranty, while Super Hybrid models receive an eight-year/100,000-mile high-voltage battery warranty. The brand also offers 24/7 roadside assistance, helping provide additional reassurance for both private and business customers.
For fleet and business users, Chery is increasingly positioning its range around total cost of ownership as well as purchase price. Its Super Hybrid models combine petrol and electric power to offer lower-emission driving while retaining the flexibility of a petrol engine, with Chery highlighting potential benefits including reduced fuel costs and lower whole-life costs.
The range provides options across several SUV segments, from the compact five-seat TIGGO 4 Super Hybrid to the larger seven-seat TIGGO 8 and TIGGO 9 Super Hybrid. This gives customers and fleet operators the flexibility to choose a vehicle around their space, performance and efficiency requirements, while maintaining a strong level of standard equipment.
Chery’s UK expansion comes as the brand looks to establish itself as a long-term presence in the market rather than simply offering an alternative based on price. Investment in UK-based engineering, a growing retailer network and a focus on specification, technology and ownership support are all forming part of the brand’s strategy. With its new R&D centre bringing Chery closer to UK engineering and customer requirements, the brand is entering its next phase of development in Britain. Combined with its high-value SUV range, hybrid technology and comprehensive warranty package, Chery is continuing to build a proposition aimed at giving both private and business customers more choice in the increasingly competitive UK market.
