Following the successful launch of the new Nissan Qashqai this year, the motoring media have recognised the car’s talents with a twin test win over its rival the Kia Sportage.
The head-to-head assessment was a ‘‘Real World Road Test’’ staged by Auto Express, a leading UK car news and reviews title. And Qashqai emerged victorious – with its refinement, great value for money and impressive equipment levels all playing a part in its success.
Auto Express noted that the initial launch of Qashqai back in the mid-2000s was a masterstroke by Nissan.
The car was hailed as having the driving manners and price of a regular hatchback, but the kerb appeal and space of a larger SUV – and it rapidly became a ‘‘sales superstar’’.
Rivals had caught up by the time the third-generation version arrived, but Qashqai remains popular and is the UK’s third best-selling new car so far in 2024.
One of the models ahead of it is Kia’s Sportage, which in recent times, says Auto Express, has also had the upper hand when going head-to-head. But now Qashqai is back in pole position!
Both cars were thoroughly assessed across 16 pages of a recent edition of Auto Express, replicated on the magazine’s website.
Favourable comments about Qashqai mentioned its clever e-Power hybrid system; impressive safety credentials; and the fact that the car is ‘‘stable and secure’’ on A and B roads, yet ‘‘agile enough when it needs to be’’.
Turning to engine noise, the new car is ‘‘hushed at speed’’ on motorways while high-speed comfort and stability were described as ‘‘great’’.
Other plus points were that the digital dashboard is large and clear and that the reversible false boot floor has a wipe-clean side – ideal for runs to the tip.
Stowage in the cabin was described as ‘‘impressive’’; the front seats have plenty of adjustment; and Qashqai’s doors open to almost a complete right angle, which makes access easy.
And the final judgment? Auto Express said: ‘‘It’s the first win for the Mk3 Qashqai in an Auto Express comparison test, an impressive turnaround considering previous results.
‘‘The great hybrid powertrain helps secure the victory, while the small revisions in this mid-life update boost its appeal.
‘‘But the key factor behind the win is its improved value for money; strong finance offers make it cheaper than ever. A win against Sportage, one of our class favourites, is a big coup. Its strong sales run deserves to continue even further.’’
