The new Nissan LEAF is proof that electric cars are anything but dull. This thoroughly modern and ultra-stylish hatchback has benefited from a design overhaul, inside and out. It also offers greater battery power and range than ever.
Exterior
The new LEAF now has real presence, thanks to its assertive stance and enhanced good looks. The car’s front fascia is bolder and more pronounced than before with sleek headlights forming a part of a striking V-shaped design. The nose of the car is especially striking, consisting of what Nissan describes as a ‘3D mesh pattern’, with the marque’s badge at its centre. The top half of the vehicle is finished in colour that contrasts with the main body, creating a slick, ‘floating roof’ appearance, which culminates in a smart-looking roof spoiler. Dark-tinted rear windows and a black tailgate lid complete the stylish picture. The five-door LEAF features larger tail lights than before, adding further to the car’s strikingly handsome looks.
Interior
The new LEAF's cabin has been also been substantially modernised with, for example, a much more impactful centre console, which is topped with a touchscreen display. All-in-all, there is a much classier look and feel to the interior, with higher quality materials being utilised to good effect. It’s also practical as well as attractive; for instance, a 435-litre boot space represents an increase of 65 litres on that offered by the first-generation model.
Performance
While the new LEAF’s updated looks are most welcome, a lot of less conspicuous improvements have taken place too, such as the car’s range. According to Nissan, this is now approximately 235 miles, which is roughly an 80-mile improvement on what the outgoing iteration is capable of. This enhancement is due to the combination of 148bhp electric motor and lithium-ion battery. The vehicle is also expected to have a top speed of 90mph. It’s estimated that battery replenishment using rapid charge points (found all over the country) will take just 40 minutes to reach 80 percent. Charging via a standard domestic power source will reach 100 percent in as little as eight hours.
Technology and safety
Besides a wide range of useful standard driver aids, such as Adaptive Cruise Control, Nissan have introduced an e-Pedal, which utilises regenerative braking via the car’s electric motor to act as both brake and accelerator. The new LEAF features autonomous-drive technology too, which delivers self-parking, enabling the car to operate without the driver touching the steering wheel.
