Possessing sharp looks and an equally attractive cabin, the well-built Auris is also good to drive. This compact hatchback is available in Active, Icon, Business Edition, Design and Excel trim lines.
The five-door Auris features a number of body-coloured fixtures, such as door handles and power-adjustable door mirrors. Also included are a smart shark-fin antenna and black roof rails (silver with Icon trims and higher). The Icon grade adds chrome inserts to the car’s lower front grille, while Design trims come with rear privacy glass. The vehicle is fitted with 15-inch steel wheels as standard, but Active grades can be optionally specified with 15-inch alloys, while Icon trims automatically come with 16-inch alloy wheels. Standard exterior illumination includes LED daytime running lights, and tail lights that emit LED light signatures.
A five-person cabin provides the driver with an adjustable seat and a tilt-and-telescopic three-spoke steering wheel. (The latter is leather-wrapped with Icon grades and higher.) Other standard features include electric front windows (one-touch on the driver’s side) and automatic air conditioning. Thanks to 60/40 split-folding rear seats, a 337-litre boot space can be increased to as much as 1,176 litres.
A 1.33-litre 99bhp petrol engine comes as standard with entry-level models. Paired with a six-speed manual gearbox, this delivers up to 51.4mpg and a 128g/km CO2 emissions figure. Optimal fuel-efficiency is provided by Hybrid models. These are installed with a 1.8-litre petrol-electric engine (and paired with automatic transmission), which returns as much as 80.7mpg and CO2 emissions as low as 79g/km.
All Auris variants feature an AM/FM radio, a WMA and MP3-compatible CD player and USB and AUX inputs. This four-speaker system can be operated using steering wheel-mounted controls too. Icon grades add two further loudspeakers, Bluetooth connectivity, a Toyota Touch 2 multimedia system (including DAB radio) and a seven-inch display screen.
Awarded a five-star crash-test rating by Euro NCAP, the Auris’ range of driver aids includes Anti-lock Braking System, Vehicle Stability Control, Hill-start Assist Control and Tyre Pressure Monitoring Warning System. Seatbelt pre-tensioners and load-limiters, global seatbelt reminders, seven airbags and ISOFIX attachments are among the array of passive safety features included as standard.
