Anyone who is even remotely interested in eco-friendly motoring will definitely want to take a look at the new KIA Niro PHEV. This plug-in hybrid vehicle is the South Korean marque’s most fuel-efficient model yet.
This fashionable compact crossover bears resemblance to its standard hybrid sibling, while differing in noticeable ways too. For instance, the new KIA Niro PHEV boasts a satin-chrome radiator grille trim on its front fascia, and chrome flourishes elsewhere on the body. The vehicle rides on lightweight 16-inch alloy wheels, which not only look good but facilitate greater efficiency too. Appropriately for a car of this type, it sports the distinctive ‘ECO plug-in’ emblem.
The KIA Niro PHEV is ideal for families or businesses – and not just because of its green credentials and low fuel-consumption. The vehicle makes room for five adult travellers, and its five-door body style ensures that access is simple. The cabin is upholstered in leather, which is finished with stylish blue stitching, reiterating the ECO colour that is found elsewhere in and on the car.
Simply plug the new Niro PHEV into a standard electrical power supply to charge the car’s battery. A full charge provides the vehicle with an electric-only range of up to 36 miles, which is greater than the average commute. This plug-in hybrid electric vehicle is installed with a 1.6-litre 104bhp petrol engine, which works in tandem with a 60bhp electric motor and an 8.9kWh lithium-ion battery. This combination helps the new Niro PHEV to return as much as 217.3mpg, while producing CO2 emissions as low as 29g/km. Despite its outstanding levels of efficiency and low-carbon tyre print, the car still manages a peak torque of 265Nm and 0-60mph in a little over ten seconds.
An eight-inch touchscreen provides intuitive access to a range of infotainment features, including a JBL Premium audio system and smartphone mirroring courtesy of Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Your compatible phone will also benefit from the inclusion of wireless charging.
The car comes with two charging cables; one for domestic use and another that can be used at rapid charging points. Also featured is Coasting Guide Control, which informs you as to the best time to coast at speeds of between 37mph and 100mph.
The standard Niro has been awarded a five-star crash-test rating by Euro NCAP so there’s no reason to suspect that the new PHEV variant will be in any different. It’s stacked with driver aids as standard, including Autonomous Emergency Braking, Adaptive Cruise Control and Lane-keep Assist. The latter, for example, ensures that the car doesn’t inadvertently drift from its intended course.
