Similar to the stinger missile, we’re expecting Kia’s new 2017 Stinger to zoom into the sports saloon market. The Stinger has finally been unveiled at the Detroit Motor Show; Kia said it’s the “highest-performance production vehicle in the company’s history”. Since the big reveal of bright yellow GT4 Stinger concept at the 2014 Detroit Motor Show we’ve been eagerly waiting for a retail vehicle. Presented in red, the vehicle boasts its rear wheel drive and luxury saloon qualities, complete with a 3.3 litre 365bhp V6 engine – you heard it right.
Kia have yet to mention a manual model, it’s full speed ahead with two eight speed automatic models announced. Powered by a reworked version of Kia’s existing twin turbo charged V6 engine, the higher version of the GT has a 0/62mph time of 5.1 seconds. A cheaper four-sylinder Stinger with a 252bhp and more subtle styling is due to be released next year, with an exciting all-electric version in development.
“The Stinger GT is a true gran turismo, a car for spirited long-distance driving,” said Gregory Guillaume, chief designer at Kia Motors Europe. “It’s not about outright power, hard-edged dynamics and brutal styling all at the expense of luxury, comfort and grace. This car is all about the journey.”
The four door saloon is due for sale in Europe by the end of the year.
The Stinger's come a long way since it's concept in 2014
