Mirai

New Toyota Mirai

With the Mirai, Toyota has avoided the typical diesel/petrol-combustion-engine route and instead opted to use leading-edge hydrogen technology, resulting in low running costs and zero emissions. This four-door sedan also sports very distinctive looks, a serene cabin and comes well-equipped too.

Exterior design

The Mirai is certainly boldly styled. For instance, its front fascia features the Toyota x-motif, the top of half of which follows the course of ultra-slim headlights and the entire length of the bonnet’s edges. Meanwhile, the lower half of this design cuts dramatically and diagonally through a large, rectangular and multi-louvered radiator grille.

Interior design

The Mirai’s interior possesses a light, airy, clean-lined and contemporary look and feel. Front-row occupants are treated to heated seats which offer eight-way power-adjustability, and the driver is able to get to grips with a leather steering wheel, which provides tilt-and-telescopic adjustability. An expansive windscreen ensures that visibility is always good.

The cabin features four very comfortable seats, and, in tandem with a smooth and quiet engine, it makes for a relaxing environment, which is further enhanced by dual-zone climate control. The lack of a conventional gear lever means there is more room for a spacious storage bin. In fact, there are lots of cubby spaces dotted around the cabin, in addition to a minimum-capacity 361-litre boot.

Performance

The Mirai’s hydrogen fuel cell engine produces 152bhp and 335Nm of torque, and returns as much as 60mpg – and no CO2 emissions whatsoever. Since hydrogen is not as expensive as either petrol or diesel, it doesn’t cost as much to fill up the tank, which has a 5kg capacity. This enables the Mirai to travel more than 300 miles before refuelling is required. The vehicle is also capable of 0-60mph in approximately 9.8 seconds and a top speed of 111mph.

Technology and safety

The Mirai comes with an 11-speaker audio system (including DAB radio), satellite navigation, Bluetooth connectivity and wireless phone-charging. An array of driver aids includes Adaptive Cruise Control, Pre-collision System, Blind Spot Monitor, Rear Cross Traffic Alert and a rear-view camera. Multiple airbags and ISOFIX child-seat attachments are among the vehicle’s range of passive safety features.
